    The initial step in Ipod disassembly is the most difficult. Its better to use a flat blade nylon tool for this step to avoid scratching your casing. Starting in the corner nearest the firewire port, pry up with your flat tool at the spot where the metal and white plastic meet. You may need to work your tool into the groove a bit and then pry up. The white plastic will then lift up slightly.

    This method does work, I bought iPod repair parts from Repair Sharks and they sent me free tools with my repair parts. They were plastic or nylon like you said. Once you dislodge one or two of the clips it isn’t that difficult to open.

    I see you are using a hex tool. Thia is needed to replace the battery or to remove the 4th generation mainboard in an iPod. Using a nylon tool or guitar pick works well on this model but not all models.
