The Flaming Lips (take 2)
Lauren, John, and I drove to Columbus, Ohio to see the The Flaming Lips. This was our second attempt to see them. The first attempt was in Philadelphia but we only saw the first half of the show. The second half was canceled due to intense rain.
This time the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. It was a perfect night for an outdoor concert. Instead of rain there was an explosion of confetti and giant balloons filling the sky. Beer was fairly affordable… none of that $8 per cup bullshit.
Lots of people burn down in Ohio. The entire venue smelled delicious in a dead skunk kind of way. It was noticeable enough for Wayne to make mention of it. He said that there was more pot smoke at this show than when he played in Holland where pot is actually legal.
The Lips don’t play much of their old stuff these days. Alas, the majority of their set material came from the Yoshimi, At War With The Mystics, and the upcoming Embryonic. I was hoping for some older songs but was left hanging. Oh well, it’s not like it was a bad show. I just didn’t get everything I was wanting. I suppose that’s just me being greedy. I wanted to hear some tracks from Clouds Taste Metallic or Hit to Death in the Future Head. Either one would have been nice.
The walk home was a long one. We didn’t pay much attention to the fact that the walk to the venue was downhill. The way back was entirely uphill. We worked up an appetite and smashed some pizza when we got back to the hotel.
By the way, we ate pizza 3 times in one day. That’s ridiculous.
Lauren took some pictures but she hasn’t put them online yet. When she does… I’ll link them.
